About Rue Melo

Born and raised in Paris, and now based in California after a number of years in New York, Rue Melo comes from an artistic and multi-cultural family that immersed her in music from a young age. Growing up, her Uruguayan father, an accomplished singer and guitarist, and her mother, a dancer of French descent, always had a varied range of records playing around the house. With all this music and art around her, it is little surprise she found singing to be the natural way to express herself.

From singing around the house, it was a natural progression to writing, recording, and performing—activities she engaged in every change she could—but it was 2005 that would prove to be the watershed year for her, hooking up with producer and co-writer Bernd Burgdorf (Tom Waits, Pink).

The two began working on a body of songs which would become her self-titled debut, along the way tapping the talents of her father, who wrote "Con Alma Y Corazon" and her brother, a producer in his own right, on “Thank You”. The music, a reflection of her diverse tastes from Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, and Edith Piaf, to Aaliyah and Biggie, is uniquely her own. The fact that she writes her own lyrics and melodies, in addition to working on her music and beats, is a refreshing bonus in an age where the term "artist" is used increasingly loosely.

During this period she also formed her band, bringing aboard bassist Bryan Bush, drummer Idris al-Mutazz Tate, and then guitarist Claudio Tomasello. The group had an instant chemistry and natural flow. In fact, their initial rehearsal produced what would be come “Can’t Deny” a song featured on the album.

And what an album it is. From radio and magazines, to the blogosphere, people fall instantly in love with the music. Adam Bernard's popular and influential blog "Adam's World" (awarded best blog by Neilson and Billboard) named Rue's debut, "Album Of The Year", beating out such high profile releases as Lily Allen's "Alright, Still...". Additionally, she has found a receptive audience in the film and tv community with, among other placements, two key features in Showtimes “The L Word”.

After a big year of touring in 2007 supporting Grammy award winning blues-rock artists, Los Lonely Boys, underground hip hop artist Lyrics Born, and alt-soul artist G. Love, 2008 shows no sign of letting up with Rue out on the road continuing to build support for the critically acclaimed Fontana/Universal distributed debut release from Katrina Sirdofsky's Fighter Records.
